FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Something does not "seem right" with my child. What should I do?

If you suspect your child is not developing language as expected, speak with your child’s pediatrician immediately. If your child is at least 18 months and does not have 10-15 basic words, tell your pediatrician your concerns at his/her 18 month wellness check and ask for an early intervention assessment.

My pediatrician recommended that I wait until my child is 24 months old before getting an early intervention evaluation. What should I do?

With all due respect, the purpose of Early Intervention is to intervene early. If you are being told to “wait and see”, but you have valid concerns, find another pediatrician who will address your concerns by referring you to the Early Intervention Program.

My child was evaluated by the Early Intervention Program, but my Service Coordinator has yet to find a therapist to start services. What should I do?

Use the resources found in the ”Shop the Bar” section to start supporting your child’s language development.

I am very busy and do not have the time to add another “thing” to our schedule. How can I help my child?

Incorporate just 10 minutes of structured language learning within your every day routines (ie meal time, bath time, potty time, daycare drop off/ pick up, etc). 10 minutes a day equals 70 minutes a week, which is 70 minutes more than doing absolutely nothing. You can do this!

Can you provide therapy to my child?

Yes. I am currently licensed in New York State, so I can only provide skilled therapy if you reside in New York State.

If you do not live in New York State, I can provide parental support, so you can help your child. If this is you, send me an email at hello@speechbar.org and we can discuss what options are available to you.

Do you offer teletherapy?

Yes. Teletherapy is the preferred method of treatment to ensure a safe environment for both the clinician and the patient. If the nature of your disorder requires in-person sessions, arrangements can be made.
